mnml.
we connected hard with our clients appreciation of simple sophistication and turned out a rewarding whole house experience woven with moments of discovery and drenched in warm woods. the story of this project begins with a closet door. simple origins of improved functionality that found its way to a multi-year, multi-structure partnership to seek and reveal the waiting potential. we think we did.
al beadle.
we took a case study approach to this renovation, using the most basic and available period appropriate materials....save for the steel siding, perhaps. this home was featured on the 2017 modern phoenix tour as well as a technology commercial that was looking for an authentic mcm setting to film. keep it simple.
haver too.
this haver received a small addition to bring critical extra space to the bedrooms. this allowed us to rework the laundry and bathroom sections for improved flow and function. every nuace of beam detailing, mortar wash, chamfered concrete edges and clerestory windows were integrated and carried through our modifications to a seamless result.
bennie gonzanlez.
an early example of the celebrated body of work by architect bennie gonzalez, this home dates back to 1954 and is located amongst the bouldered hills of carefree. under the direction of michelle from MORstudio we helped transform this property into a home for her family and beyond. we sourced matching block from colorado for the new detached garage, added an office, nursery and bike shop in the former garage and built a new staircase to a converted studio-to-loft bedroom. a custom swing out steel window and daybed encourage a little lazy r+r.
blaine drake.
we should preface by stating that this home is only believed to be a blaine drake. regardless of the bravado it's most certainly a premium example of modernist sensibilities. trellised eves bring light into the front rooms, indoor planters are always a hit and all the all white treatment lends a palm springs mood to this willo charmer.
haver one.
this haver renovation picked up where the previous updates had left off. we carried the vibe outside and created a built-in bench suite and outdoor kitchen just beyond the sliding glass wall. a steel i-beam was used to open the kitchen and then quickly concealed with wood cladding to blend with the surroundings. custom walnut millworks soften the crisp kitchen reno. we repurposed the old kitchen cabs into a power-house laundry for a home this size.
campbell residence.
this sprawling paradise valley mid century estate had undergone several dissociated additions over the years and desperately needed some cohesive order restored. spacial planning plays a crucial role in re-design and it was a very specific idea that helped us edge out the competitors on this one: the breezeway. nearly 600 square feet of sun soaked thoroughfare interconnecting the spaces that changed the dialog to possible. much happenstance ensued and without further ado; stanford drive.
space age modernism for the chat-gpt era. these entrusting seattle-ites threw us the keys to the castle and encouraged us to have a blast with the design. we most certainly did that and we are pumped on the outcome and by the process. the monochromatic exteriors turned out so amazing but the secret facade out back is a show stopper. we love exploring our whimsey on your behalf...any takers?
the capri.
a fun garden-style apartment project with a cool design by moazam of mod_ap. we added a few elements like the chopstick entry, polished stainless signage and the concrete formed water feature inside the courtyard. we performed all of the exterior renovations and landscape that played into the rebranding effort, including color themes, material and plant selections.

north central poolhouse.
if you've driven through luci's at the orchard you may have seen this red spectacle peeking through the canopy. this was like building a watch with a hammer, so many critical dimensions and angles with nowhere to hide. working with pure, honest materials keeps you engaged at every step of the process to ensure proper fit and finish.
et wright.
we don't use a stamp and repeat design overlay. each job is custom tailored to match the energy and style of our homeowners and then regulated by the architectural environment for a restrained pairing that is personal but also self aware. homage is paid to the desert modernist in playful skylights and arched ironwork. a stacked neutral palette keeps our focus on the structure and its contents as nothing attempts to overpower the mood.
coronado dwell house.
we got left in the construction dust when this thing went viral so many years ago and yet it remains a legacy of pride today. truly a splendor of details around every corner. this homes' duality of historic and modern leaves something for everyone. details include restored original double hung weighted windows, handmade steel doors, custom made tile and luxe bathrooms. we even had to weld a new steel frame inside the old carriage house to preserve the structure from collapse. cheers to another hundred years.
solano.
a massive outdoor living overhaul takes advantage of every zone for this camelback retreat. that's a 50 foot i-beam we flew in for a post-free patio cover which shades a set of automatic, pocketing glass doors. we reshaped the pool, added a spa and built an outdoor kitchen complete with an architectural grilleworks fire cooker. and we added a roll down movie screen and speakers throughout just make sure we covered all the bases!
encanto revival.
we went through an historic architecture review and were denied the option to change the roofing material - and i couldn't be more pleased with the decision! i think natives to the southwest can grow tired of the overuse of faux spanish elements, losing sight when confronted with their authentic roots. though all the systems were updated here we tried to stay true to the spirit of this old house.

architect fred griffins personal residence in the encanto palmcroft neighborhood is a glory of glass wedged onto a difficult, triangular lot. we were tasked with creating a complimentary poolhouse structure which required heavy navigation through historic and variance approvals. punctuating the tip of the lot we added similar windows, big glass and an oversized patio reflecting back to the main home. we also updated the primary home. most notably - the repair and ombre paint theme for the mechanical louvered shutters. we made a new custom entry door, rebuilt the front grid-work, added a front sitting patio and reconfigured the owners suite among other updates.
eye opener
what a small world. a client that didn't hire us to renovate a haver home ended up calling back several years later for help restoring their new building; the eye opener in sunnyslope. it's gets even smaller when we found out during construction that it would be occupied by our good friend frank malefors. now he, ryan and miles have a power trio of vintage goods and wicked design under one roof. we are pleased that their business and building will be strutting at this years modern phoenix home tour. get your wallets warmed up, lots of great stuff abounds!
